Gasunie, Thyssengas and Gasunie Deutschland sign agreement for first cross-border hydrogen transport infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany

The border points in Oude Statenzijl (Groningen) and Vlieghuis (Drenthe) will form a crucial link, connecting the Dutch industrial regions, import routes and storage and production facilities with industrial regions in Germany and the rest of north-western Europe.

The agreements set out important technical and organisational aspects, including schedule, location, capacity, pressure and other specifications. Such agreements are needed to be able to transport hydrogen safely and reliably across the border. Signing these agreements is a good first step towards the complete realisation of multiple cross-border hydrogen connections between the Netherlands and Germany.

Gasunie’s Director of Hydrogen Transport Helmie Botter explains, “Cross-border hydrogen trade and transport is crucial for a properly functioning hydrogen market in north-western Europe. The agreements we’ve made not only enable transport via our infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany (Ruhr region), but also to and from Denmark. We’re striving to create an integrated hydrogen market and working together closely with our fellow TSOs to make cross-border transport as easy as possible.”
