Hydrogen pipeline marks important step towards sustainable industry in the Port of Rotterdam
Construction of the 32-kilometer pipeline for transporting hydrogen in the Rotterdam port area is nearing completion. This pipeline in Rotterdam is not only the start of the national hydrogen network in the Netherlands, but also the first section of a future European hydrogen network. The infrastructure is intended to help industrial companies become more sustainable and is therefore a crucial link in the energy transition.
Hydrogen network boosts sustainable growth in the port
The pipeline connects producers on the Maasvlakte with large industrial customers in the port. Shell and Air Liquide are each building a 200-megawatt electrolyzer on the Maasvlakte, which will rapidly increase the production of green hydrogen in Rotterdam. Shell will soon be supplying its refinery in Pernis directly via Hynetwork's new hydrogen pipeline, which will reduce CO2 emissions. Uniper is also working on production plans and is actively seeking customers in the region where demand is high: the twenty largest industrial users in the port area consume around 500,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The pipeline is therefore an essential link for both producers and customers.
The new network will enable companies to switch to green or low-CO2 hydrogen. The pipeline is designed for future growth and is part of a broader strategy to connect the Netherlands with industrial regions in Germany.
