After approximately two years of planning, conducting numerous studies, engaging in discussions, and gathering ideas from the community, a preferred route (Preferred Alternative) for the hydrogen network in the North Sea Canal Area has been established. This milestone in the development of the hydrogen network in the North Sea Canal Area has been achieved through effective collaboration with the local community. Kees van der Laan, a resident of Beverwijk, has been closely involved in the project. Together with Zhen Zhen Zheng, Strategic Regional Manager for the hydrogen network in the North Sea Canal Area, Kees discusses the collaboration and why it is crucial for the local community to remain engaged with the project.

When you are working on the energy transition, you should do that work as sustainably as possible. That was the philosophy of Hynetwork Services technical project manager Ronald Pieters when he started purchasing the pipes for Hydrogen Network Rotterdam. A year ago, the procurement process was started ‘because the pipes can’t be bought off the shelf’, Ronald recalls. Now they are ready for the next step in realising Hydrogen Network Rotterdam: construction. We spoke to Ronald about the purchase and delivery of the hydrogen pipes.

On Thursday 9 December, Gasunie and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) will announce our plans for the realisation of the hydrogen network in Groningen. We will do that via the publication ‘Intention and Proposal for Participation’. We would like to present these plans to the community, so we will organise several walk-in evenings for local residents and other interested parties. There, we will explain what is planned, how we would like to keep them informed, and how they can participate. The national hydrogen network should significantly reduce CO2 emissions from industry in Groningen and the rest of the Netherlands.

The business community in the Rotterdam port area is making an effort to switch from fossil energy and raw materials to alternatives. Deltalinqs entrepreneurs’ association is pleased with the investment in the hydrogen pipeline right through the port area. “It shows companies that they mean business.”

On Friday 4 April 2025, Hynetwork and the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth announced plans for an underground hydrogen pipeline in the western Netherlands. The plans were announced via the publication of the Intention and Proposal for Participation. Juanne Rours, Regional Manager for the Hydrogen Network Western Netherlands project, takes us through the plans and explains how everyone can contribute ideas.

On Friday, 23 January 2026, the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth, together with Hynetwork, announced the plans for the hydrogen network in Limburg. This was done through the publication of the Statement of Intent and Proposal for Participation . We would like to present these plans to the local community and other stakeholders.

On Thursday 6 March 2025, the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth, together with Hynetwork, announced the plans for the hydrogen network in the eastern region of the Netherlands through the publication of the ‘Notification of Intention and Proposal for Participation’. We would like to present these plans to the people in the local communities.

In the ceramic industry, there are technical and economic challenges to connect industrial sites to the national/regional hydrogen grid. The report "H2 for the Ceramic Industry" identifies these challenges and provides initial insights into the cost development of natural gas and hydrogen for industries.

From Friday 4 April through Thursday 15 May, the public was invited to respond to the initial plans for Hydrogen Network Western Netherlands as published in the Intention and Proposal for Participation. A total of 51 official responses were received and addressed. The responses and our replies can be found in the published consultation response document on the productpage of RVO (in Dutch).

The detailed design for the hydrogen pipeline in the North Sea Canal Area was completed late last year. This means that we know right down to the last millimetre where we will lay the pipeline and how. This would never have been possible without close collaboration with the local communities.

As part of the roll-out of the development of the Dutch hydrogen network, Hynetwork Services (a 100% subsidiary of Gasunie N.V.) together with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) will organise an information meeting for (future) clients. Hynetwork Services will provide an overview of the current state of affairs of the roll-out plan for the hydrogen network, including the progress of our procedures and the contractual process. Additionally, EZK will explain the framework for the hydrogen network. After these informative sessions, you can network over lunch.

Shell is the first company to sign an agreement to use the hydrogen pipeline (formerly known as HyTransPort) in the port of Rotterdam that Gasunie is laying in collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam Authority from the Maasvlakte to Pernis in order to make the industry in the port more sustainable.

Hynetwork has established its connection policy for Hydrogen network Netherlands. In this connection policy, we define the rules for parties seeking to connect to the Dutch hydrogen network.

The first specifications for Hynetwork Services customers are available. It concerns the 'Functional requirements for fiscal and non-fiscal metering systems; Hydrogen network'.

The entire hydrogen network in the Netherlands is too big to build all at once, so we are doing it in sections. We have divided the network into several subsections (routes). When building the hydrogen network, we will follow the steps below for each route.

The various departments involved in the Hydrogen Network North Sea Canal Area project are hard at work, from the surveys at the location where the hydrogen pipeline will be laid to the engineers who are drawing up the detailed designs. At the same time, many people are working on the various permit applications, and the contractor is already considering how the work can best be carried out.

Hynetwork works in accordance with the principles and standards established in its connection policy. This connection policy is aimed at getting ahead of developments in the hydrogen market. Our goal is to encourage this development as much as possible. An increasing number of regional government bodies and other parties recently submitted requests to Hynetwork for the implementation of connection set-ups in the main network in preparation for future hydrogen developments in certain regions. Implementing a connection set-up is a good solution to be able to meet this need, which is why Hynetwork has decided to respond to these requests from (regional) parties. This has resulted in a new contract: the Valve Study Agreement (VSA)..

Hynetwork and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) are taking the next step in the Hydrogen Network Western Netherlands project. The research plan (the draft Scope and Detail Memorandum or draft NRD) is available for inspection from Friday 10 April 2026. This plan sets out what we intend to investigate and the potential routes we are considering for the hydrogen pipeline. Everyone is invited to comment on this plan until Thursday 21 May 2026.

The Delta Rhine Corridor will focus on the construction of pipelines for hydrogen and CO 2 . Minister Sophie Hermans of the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth announced this in a parliamentary letter on 5 December 2024.

On 7 March 2025, Hynetwork and the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth together announced the preferred route, or ‘draft Preferred Alternative’, for the hydrogen network to be developed in the Dutch provinces of Drenthe and Overijssel.

On 19 April 2024, together with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, we announced the preferred route for the development of the future hydrogen network in the North Sea Canal area.

The plans for the future hydrogen pipeline in the western Netherlands involve constructing a new pipeline through several nature reserves, including the Krimpenerhout nature reserve near Krimpen aan de Lek and the Donckse Velden nature reserve in Ridderkerk. During the presentation of the plans to the local community, we heard a number of concerns and responses.
