Hydrogen quality addressed in letter to parliament

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) will make the final decision on the quality specification and temperature for Hydrogen network Netherlands.

Increasing support for 99.5% purity requirement

The harmonisation of criteria is important for the creation of an integrated European hydrogen market. In October 2023, the minister therefore decided to take extra time to step up the discussions with neighbouring countries. Our neighbouring countries have shown that they increasingly support harmonisation at a minimum purity requirement of 99.5%.

Gasunie working on a joint specification for 99.5%

The creation of a European standard for hydrogen is likely to take another three years. Hydrogen flows into the network in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany will arrive earlier. As a result, several transport companies, including Gasunie, have begun working on a joint specification based on a purity of 99.5%. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) will wait for the results of this joint specification before making a final decision on the hydrogen specification. That decision is not expected this year. The specification can be used in contracts and interconnection agreements and as input for European standardisation.
