Investigating the ground between Spaarndam and Zuidbroek

We can reuse an existing natural gas pipeline between Spaarndam and Zuidbroek for Hydrogen Network Western Netherlands, and we will soon adapt it to transport hydrogen. Before we can begin, we are investigating the ground at various locations along the pipeline. That work began in September.

What exactly are we investigating?

We are mainly looking at the soil around what are known as shut-off locations. These are places where the flow of gas can be shut off or released. We will need to make changes to them soon to make the pipeline suitable for hydrogen. The soil surveys will give us a clear view of the subsoil, which will help us to carry out the work safely and carefully. We are also investigating the effects of our work on the surrounding area.

Various types of research

We are conducting various types of research, such as:

  • environmental soil surveys
  • ecological investigations (on plants and animals)
  • archaeological and cultural research
  • research into the possible presence of unexploded ordnance from the war

For example, we examine whether there are any protected plants or animals, whether the soil is contaminated, and how the soil is structured. We do this by making field visits and drilling manual boreholes. We also install monitoring wells to examine the groundwater. This research is virtually unnoticeable to the local community.

Preparation for the real work

All the information we are now gathering will be used to prepare the environmental impact assessment that we will draft in 2026. It also helps us to prepare for the work properly. For example, what if we find contaminated soil? Then we will make sure it is disposed of in time. And if a rare plant is growing in the area, we will take precautions to protect it.
