Steps towards establishing the hydrogen network

The entire hydrogen network in the Netherlands is too big to build all at once, so we are doing it in sections. We have divided the network into several subsections (routes). When building the hydrogen network, we will follow the steps below for each route.

Assessment

This is the study phase. Before the Hydrogen Network Netherlands project began, extensive studies were carried out on topics like using the existing natural gas network to transport hydrogen. In addition to these studies, which cover the entire network, the assessment phase includes route-level studies. We look at what we can convert along each route, where new construction is needed and whether there are special features in the region that need to be considered.

Design selection

In this phase, we determine exactly what we will build. We make a functional design that indicates such things as how much capacity is needed and how large the pipeline should be. We also specify where different parts of the network should be located, such as the sections that allow us to connect customers. In this phase, we can also fine-tune the schedule and budget.

Project specification

In this phase, we determine exactly how we will build and we create a technical design. This design considers issues such as how we need to dig or possibly drill to lay the pipes. We also map out detailed costs and develop an advisory plan for community level management. This includes which permits we all need to apply for, which landowners we are dealing with and how we will involve our neighbours in further project planning. Sometimes we have to order materials at this stage to ensure they are available in time for the construction phase.

Preparing for construction

In this phase, we arrange the final details before construction actually begins. We start working with a contractor, buy materials, arrange all the necessary permissions and permits, and create a detailed design for the contractor.

Construction

The contractor can get to work. This is when construction really starts.

Commissioning

Once the hydrogen pipeline has been laid, it needs to be tested. We make sure everything is sealed and works properly under pressure.

Completion

The hydrogen pipeline has been tested and is ready to go. Customers can start using the pipeline.
