How we ensure a reliable hydrogen network
Hydrogen plays an important role in the energy transition. It enables industry to become more sustainable. Hydrogen can be transported and stored, ensuring that the Netherlands has a reliable energy supply for the future. Safety is at the heart of this process. From design to operation, we make sure hydrogen is transported safely through our network, using strict standards, suitable materials, and continuous monitoring. This is how we build a network that is ready for the future and safe for people and the environment.
Safety in design
Safety starts with the design of a route. We carry out extensive risk analyses and select pipelines and materials suitable for hydrogen transport. We also follow strict international standards. You can read more about route design in this article.
Safe pipeline construction
Building the hydrogen network is a major task. We work with experienced contractors and make clear agreements about safe working practices. Daily supervision ensures proper execution. For a large part of the network, we reuse existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport. Watch our video to see how we do this or read this article. Safe operation and management
Once the hydrogen pipelines are in place and operational, we maintain continuous oversight. We mark pipeline locations, monitor them, carry out inspections and maintenance, and can shut down parts of the network in case of an emergency. As with natural gas, rules apply for excavation near pipelines to prevent damage and risks. Want to know more? Safety for the environment
Hydrogen pipelines are located underground. Before installing new pipelines, we assess the impact on the environment. We consider various environmental aspects such as soil, water, and nature, and take existing infrastructure like other cables and pipelines into account. This ensures that hydrogen pipelines are safely and properly integrated. Above ground, only the installations needed to manage the hydrogen network safely are visible.
