Gasunie and Fluxys sign deal to interconnect Dutch and Belgian hydrogen infrastructure Dutch Gasunie subsidiary Hynetwork and its Belgian counterpart Fluxys hydrogen have signed a joint development agreement (JDA) for a cross-border hydrogen connection between the Netherlands and Belgium. Where possible, this connection will be developed using existing natural gas pipelines that have been repurposed for hydrogen transmission. The two companies aim to complete this connection by around 2030. Gasunie, Thyssengas and Gasunie Deutschland sign agreement for first cross-border hydrogen transport infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany Gasunie in the Netherlands and Thyssengas H2 and Gasunie Deutschland in Germany want to develop a cross-border hydrogen transport infrastructure between the Netherlands and Germany. This week, they signed an agreement for the joint realisation of this infrastructure. The connection will largely consist of existing natural gas pipelines. Gasunie starts construction of national hydrogen network in the Netherlands Yesterday, Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy Rob Jetten announced new plans for the construction of a national transport network for hydrogen. Gasunie will develop the hydrogen network in the Netherlands in the coming years, after which it will assume the role of TSO (Transmission System Operator). Gasunie will also play an important role in the storage and import of hydrogen. Due to the expected growth in offshore hydrogen production in the North Sea, Minister Jetten will investigate whether Gasunie can also fulfill the role of grid operator at sea. These new plans are a major step in the development of a more sustainable energy system in the Netherlands. Green Deal: hydrogen transport through Gasunie network makes industry in Zeelandic Flanders stronger and more sustainable Dow Benelux, Yara and ICL-IP intend to share hydrogen for industrial purposes through Gasunie Transport Services’ national gas transport network. Underground transport through the gas network is a sustainable, efficient and safe way of transporting hydrogen. Henk Kamp, Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, signed the Green Deal on Hydrogen for the region with the stakeholders today to endorse their intention. 350 metres of hydrogen pipeline under Dintelhaven We are working with Hanab Pipelines & Industry to lay the first section of the Dutch hydrogen network in the area around the Port of Rotterdam. To cross under Dintelhaven, the hydrogen pipeline was tunnelled under the water using HDD arc drilling. Guido Custers to be succeeded by Joost Hooghiem as project director from 1 December Guido Custers is stepping down as project director of the Hydrogen Network Netherlands from 1 December. He will hand over his duties to Joost Hooghiem, who has been involved in the project since August this year. North Sea Canal Area The North Sea Canal Area (NSCA) cluster is one of the largest industrial clusters in the Netherlands. Together with Schiphol and the Port of Amsterdam, the NSCA is a critical area for logistics and industry. Rotterdam Rotterdam is already one of the most important energy ports in Europe. Hynetwork has laid a new hydrogen pipeline in this area to help the Port of Rotterdam establish and maintain its position as Europe’s leading green energy port. That is good for employment and our climate. This publication includes: House of Representatives informed about cost estimate for hydrogen network The development of the hydrogen infrastructure is crucial for decarbonising industry. Towards the end of last year, Hynetwork presented a draft version of its new roll-out plan for the hydrogen network to market participants for consultation purposes. After considering the proposed changes to the roll-out plan, Hynetwork updated the investment costs for the hydrogen network and earlier this month we informed the Minister about the results. Although the roll-out plan has yet to be finalised, it is clear that, as with other energy infrastructure, the investment costs are increasing. Roll-out plan 2023 Hynetwork is developing the national hydrogen network based on the rollout plan published in mid-2022 by the then Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK). In 2023, based on insights gained, we proposed an adjustment to the rollout plan and held a market consultation. We incorporated the responses in the revised version of the roll-out plan that we submitted to the ministry before Christmas last year. This revised version of the rollout plan was not adopted by the minister at the time because of developments in the Delta Rhine Corridor (DRC). As a result of the ongoing decision-making process around the DRC, we indicated in summer 2024 that we would come back with an update of the rollout plan by the end of 2024 that would also take into account the latest insights into the development of other parts of the network. This proposal to change the roll-out plan was published on 10 December 2024 . Planning update Hydrogen Network Netherlands The energy transition in the Netherlands must advance rapidly. With our infrastructure, we want to help industries become sustainable in the Netherlands. This will keep us an competitive location for industry, which is also good for our economy and employment. The development of all these transition projects will benefit from clarity on the availability of infrastructure. That is why Hynetwork (a subsidiary of Gasunie) is currently working hard to update the roll-out plan for the Dutch hydrogen network. This is necessary partly due to developments around the Delta Rhine Corridor (in Dutch) . In the webinar on 4 July 2024 , we explained that this update also anticipates shifts in the development of other routes. Although this round of updates will not be completed until the end of the year, we are giving you an early update now.
